As Lieutenant Governor, Simon to focus on Illinois’ education challenges

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Earlier this month, Sheila Simon was in the Capitol for the first time since she and Gov. Pat Quinn were elected Nov. 2. This time was different, though. The campaign was over, Simon was being shown her office spaces for the first time, and the reality of what lies ahead for the former Southern Illinois University law professor was starting to set in.

“There are different times when it settles in, in different ways. I guess being in the Capitol for the first time since the election makes it very real,” Simon said.

While Tea Party celebrated, Green Party seeks day in court

While the Tea Party was tabulating the spoils of victory after the general election, the Green Party in Illinois was ready to go to court.

According to a party announcement, the Green’s gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney and U.S. Senate candidate LeAlan Jones filed suit against WTTW, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Public Broadcasting Service and its president and CEO, Daniel J. Schmidt, over their exclusion from debates prior to November’s elections.

As the chief executive of the state, the governor of Illinois is responsible for enacting laws passed by the Illinois General Assembly. The governor resides in the state’s executive mansion in Springfield. Illinois currently has no gubernatorial term limit. With the state’s history of corruption in the gubernatorial seat and the current budget deficit, transparency and spending reform are on the top of all candidate’s list.

‘Whitey-gate’ was nothing new to Green Party, says Whitney

Rich Whitney is convinced the misspelling of his name as ‘Rich Whitey’ in 23 wards in Chicago is due to one of two things, “a deliberate act or gross negligence.” Either way, he says the Green Party is on familiar turf.
